Aman Kohli snatched a pulsating decider for Khar Gymkhana ‘Challengers’, to join Khar Gymkhana ‘Wizards of Hazards’ in the quarter-finals of the BSAM-organised Zarine & Yazdi Daruvala Charitable Trust Mumbai Billiards League, at the Dadar Parsee Colony Gymkhana.
Challengers overcame the experienced Park Club ‘Beach Boys’ 731-721 in a thriller, while Wizards halted PG ‘The Novices’ 535-489. Joining the Khar Gymkhana teams in the last eight were MCF ‘Tough Men’ who eased past Islam Gymkhana ‘Billiards Warriors’ 550-457 and Matunga Gymkhana ‘Nirmal Anand’ who prevailed over CRMI ‘Star Blue’ 552-527 in another tight contest.
Amit Sapru and Sanjiv Bijlani won the first two ties to give Beach Boys a dream start, leaving compatriot Vishal Gehani to score 200 against Kohli who needed 192 to win in the 200-up contest.
It was a neck-and-neck battle between Gehani, who played with a +40 handicap, and Kohli (+80) until the former led 133-103 to remain on course. But Kohli, who was equally guilty of missing shots, capitalized on Gehani’s slew of missed opportunities. Leading 193-181 Gehani bungled again to allow Kohli to change the script in dramatic fashion.
