Gehani inspires Park Club to win maiden BSAM billiards crown

Mumbai: Park Club, Dadar were finally crowned champions on their eighth attempt, as they defeated NSCI ‘A’ 581-545 points in the final of the BSAM organized Greatwhite-CCI Kekoo Nicholson Mumbai Billiards League 2023, and played at the Cricket Club of India’s Sir Wilson Jones billiards hall.

Having earlier lost in seven previous finals, Park Club seemed determined to play for a win. They perfectly planned their strategies, and inspired by the brilliance of Vishal Gehani who churned out an outstanding performance, they managed to pull off the win against the younger and spirited NSCI team.

NSCI captain Abhishek Bajaj (+60) with a neat break of 62 points went on to defeat Park Club’s captain Sanjiv Bijlani (+50) 200-193. Later, Park Club's most accomplished player Gehani showed great character and with smart tactical play outsmarted NSCI’s Sidhesh Khaitan winning by a massive difference of 200-36 points margin.

Gehan’s massive win by 164 points wiped out NSCI’s advantage and earned his team a 112 point advantage going into the third match.

That left Park Club’s third team member Lalit Jham (+60) to score just 88 points while NSCI’s Abhishek Joshi (+20) faced a stiff task as he had to score the full 200 points for a win.

Jham played confidently and was unfazed even as Joshi with clever strategies and cautious approach tried to unrattle him. But, Jham stayed cool and gathered the points with small breaks from some bold attempts, including long pots to gradually score the required number of points to clinch a satisfying win and seal Park Club's maiden triumph.

Park Club players received the ‘Champions’ trophy and a cheque of Rs 66,000 from Chief Guest Mr Rikhav Shah, Director, Greatwhite Electricals and Mrs Shailja Chopra, Marketing Head, Greatwhite Electricals. NSCI were presented with the runners-up trophy and a cash prize of Rs 33,000. The losing semi-finalists took home Rs 16,500 each and the losing quarter-finalists got Rs 8,500 each.

Hindu Gymkhana’s Siddharth Parikh who constructed the highest unfinished 204 point break in the initial phase and CCI’s Pankaj Advani who compiled a break of unfinished 200 points in his maiden match received a cash award Rs 5000 each. Parikh earned a further Rs 2000 for the best break by a player in the -90 handicap category. NSCI’s Abhishek Bajaj (+60 handicap) who had a run of 62 in the finals, and Khar Gymkhana’s Tathya Sachdev (+30 handicap) who had made a break of 98, won the award for the best break in their respective handicap categories and both were richer by Rs 2500 each.

Result – Final: Park Club (+100 handicap) beat NSCI ‘A’ (+145 handicap) – (Sanjiv Bijlani (+50) lost to Abhishek Bajaj (+60) 193-200, Vishal Gehani (-10) bt Sidhesh Khaitan (+65) 200-36, Lalit Jham (+60) bt Abhishek Joshi (+20) 88-164).
