    Dhruv  tames Arun to win the final

    Mumbai:  World No.3 Dhruv Sitwala amply demonstrated that  he is far above the rest  while taming seasoned Arun Agrawal 4-0  in the final showdown between the city’s  two top players in  the final of the Matunga Gymkhana Invitation Billiards tournament, here late on Saturday night.  The win brought a cheque of Rs 20,000 for him, while Arun had to settle for Rs 12,000 being the second best. Dhruv triumphed 150 (66, 82)-133 (100), 150 (110, 40)-101 (88),150 (103-unfinished)-121 (44), 130 (151 unfinished)-2.

    What was most remarkable feature of  Dhruv’s win was his tenacity as was seen in the opening frame, which saw Arun rattling up a century break before Dhruv could have a look at the table. And yet, it was he who ends up winning the first frame, by firing breaks of 66 and 82. The second frame  brought the best in Dhruv as he hit the top with a century break (110) and followed by another of 40 as he went on the lead 2-0. The third frame again looked like going Arun’s way as he established a big lead, but lo! from 20 to Arun 121, Dhruv hit back with an unfinished break of 103 to go up 3-0 and the fourth turned out to be virtually no contest as Dhruv was in such mood that saw him finishing the tie with an unfinished break of 151 to end Arun’s misery.

    Results: (Semifinals):Dhruv Sitwala bt V. Subramaniam 4-0: 150 (81, 57) – 4; 150 (100) – 12, 150 (91) – 40, 150 (71, 44) – 51;

     Arun  Agrawal bt Devendra Joshi 4-3: 150-48,137-150 (124),150-132 (56), 129-150; 125-150 (66), 150 (97)- 35, 150 (77) – 85.

     (Final): Dhruv Sitwala bt Arun  Agrawal 150 (66, 82)-133 (100), 150 (110, 40)-101 (88),150 (103-unfinished)-121 (44), 130 (151 unfinished)-2.

    Dhruv, Arun enter final  in contrasting fashion

    Mumbai: Home favourite V. Subramaniam found  that playing against a world No.3 Dhruv Sitwala is no joke and no wonder as Dhruv most of the time kept him waiting for getting turn before Dhruv triumphed 4-0 with spate of substantial breaks in each of the four frames to breeze into the final of the Matunga Gymkhana Invitation Billiards tournament, here on Saturday. Dhruv fired  breaks of 81 and 57 in the first frame, 100 in the second, 91 in third and 71 and 44 in the fourth frames. Poor Subramaniam’s best came  the fourth frame with 51 points to his credit.

    Dhruv’s opponent for the coveted Rs20,000 winner’s prize will be seasoned  stalwart Arun Agrawal. However, Arun’s passage to the title round wasn’t that smooth. As he had to contend with another world class player in Devendra Joshi. After taking time to settle down, Devendra lost the opening frame, but found his touch in  the next when with the help of century break (124), he made if 1-1.  Arun, on the other hand, was patience personified and well focussed as took the next frame to go 2-1 up only to see Devendra claiming the next two to lead 3-2.  It was in the sixth frame,  that Arun was at his very best as he notched up a break of 97 to make it 3-all and then another 77 in the deciding frame saw him clinching the tie.

    Results: (Semifinals):

    Dhruv Sitwala bt V. Subramaniam 4-0: 150 (81, 57) – 4; 150 (100) – 12, 150 (91) – 40, 150 (71, 44) – 51;

    Arun  Agrawal bt Devendra Joshi 4-3: 150-48,137-150 (124),150-132 (56), 129-150; 125-150 (66), 150 (97)- 35, 150 (77) – 85.

    ‘Raja’ Subramaniam rocks on way to semis

    Mumbai:  V. Subramaniam, ‘Raja’ of green baize, is a fighter to the core His tensely fought 4-1 win over Siddharth Parekh of P.J.Hindu Gymkhana, gladdened the hearts of his home supporters on his way to the semifinals of the Matunga Gymkhana Invitation billiards tournament, co-sponsored by Pidilite and held at  their billiards hall on Friday.  If there was any aberration in ‘Raja’ win, it was the loss of  the third frame, in which he looked out of sorts as Siddharth totally dominated it.. But thereafter  dit was Subramaniam all the way as with the help of spate of solid breaks in the fourth and fifth frames he won  the tie 150-125, 150 (75, 76)- 118 (114), 8-150, 150 (81)-70, 150 (116)-25. And there was all-season player and former state champion Arun Agrawal, who overcame the stiff challenge of gritty Vishal Madan before joining Subramanai and  Druv Sitwala, who made short work of his P.J.Hindu Gymkhana-mate Chandu Shah 150-24, 150-38 150-87, 150-26.     Dhruv makes short work of Ishpreet;

    Siddharth downs Aditya in a tense tie

    Mumbai:  World No.3 Dhruv Sitwala never takes his opponent lightly, be he is seasoned pro or a junior like Ishpreet Singh and that was very much visible as he routed the Khar Gymkhana junior  150-55, 150-109, 150-64 to sail into the quarterfinals of the Matunga Gymkhana Invitation Billiards Tournament, here on Thursday.  However, the most engrossing tie was between Siddharth Parekh of P.j.Hindu Gymkhana and Aditya Agrawal of Bombay Gymkhana. It was Siddharth who opened with a century break to take the first frame. Aditya, however, fought back to take the second and third frames – notching up breaks of 51 and 70 in the third frame . It was do and die situation for Siddharth I the fourth frame, which he managed to win though Aditya had a break of 69 and then in the decider Siddharth fired a break of 72 to put out Aditya. Vishal madan is a cool customer as was witnessed as he demolished Mahesh Jagdale 3-2 in another thrilling tie. Vishal, who lost the first two frames, turned the heat thereafter to romp home for a 117-150, 148-150, 150-124, 150-74, 150-53 win.
