    Parikh's late effort breaks Blazzers

    Mumbai, September 28, 2011

Experienced campaigner Siddharth Parikh of P .J. Hindu Gymkhana 'Hustlers' seemed to have saved his best for the last, quite literally. He produced a splendid last ditch effort, which culminated in an unfinished break of 40 points, that helped Hustler to clinch a 3-2 win against Otter's Club 'Trail Blazzers' and emerge champions in the WZO (World Zoroastrian Organisation) Trust Mumbai snooker league - 2011. The league was organised by the Billiards & Snooker Association of Maharashtra (BSAM) and hosted by the DPCG.

In a tense final, the two sides shared the opening four frames, before Parikh (+10 handicap) was once again pitted against Paul Ferreira (+45) in the decider. With Ferreira not taking too many risks, Parikh trailed 32-55 with the last three reds left on the table. However, a costly miss by Ferreira at that juncture left his opponent on an easy leave. Parikh grabbed the opportunity with both hands and with some exquisite potting, including a long pot of a tight brown against the side cushion, he went on to polish the balls off the table to trigger celebrations amongst his teammates, friends and members of DPCG, who had turned up in large numbers to witness the final.

Parikh had lost to Ferreira in the third frame after Hustlers won the first two frames. Kartik Jhaveri (+45) beat Zenul Arsiwala (+45) 101-87 and then Chirag Mehta and Anish Jhaveri (+50) defeated Sachin Purswani and Kunal (+53) 103-75 to give Hustlers a 2-0 lead. After Ferreira's win, Arsiwala won the fourth frame against Jhaveri to level the scores at 2-2.

The champions Hustlers received from Chief Guest, Michael Ferreira a four-time world billiards champion a cheque of Rs 50,000 and a glittering WZO Trust snooker trophy.

The losing finalists got the runners-up trophy and a cheque of Rs 25,000. The two losing semi-finalists were presented a purse of Rs 12,500 each and the four losing quarter-finalists received Rs 5,000 each.

Yasin Merchant of khar Gymkhana 'Rivals, who compiled the highest break of 68 in the tournament was awarded a trophy, while Rahul Sachadev of JVPG 'Dons' was adjudged the most young promising player and was also awarded a trophy.

P.J. Hindu Gymkhana 'Hustlers' continued their domineering performance to waltz into the finals of the WZO (World Zoroastrian Organisation) Trust Mumbai snooker league - 2011, organised by the Billiards & Snooker Association of Maharashtra (BSAM).

The Hustlers once again uncorked champagne stuff to tame fancied Khar Gymkhana 'Rivals' by a convincing 3-0 margin in a semi-final match at the Dadar Parsee Colony Gymkhana (DPCG) billiards hall.

In the title clash, Hustlers will take on Otter's Club 'Trail Blazzers', who snatched a close 3-2 win over another formidable outfit ECC 'Barracudas' in the other semi-final.

The Hustlers seem to be peaking to form at the right time, as they had also beaten DPCG 'Roaring Tigers' in the quarter-final by an identical margin.

Kartik Jhaveri (+45 handicap) was all at ease as he faced ace cueist and two-time Asian champions, Yasin Merchant (scratch) in the opening frame. Jhaveri just stuck to the basics as he potted steadily to come out 89-56 winner.

Later, the Hustlers' trusted duo of Chirag Mehta and Anish Jhaveri (+50) came up with another solid effort to sideline H Pahhuja and P Chokshi (+40) 96-48 in the second frame (doubles) and give their team a 2-0 lead.

Hustlers wrapped things up rather quickly as Siddharth Parikh (+10) compiled some small, but useful breaks to put it across Amandeep Kohli (+40) by a 81-67 points margin and confirm their passage to the summit round.

In the other semi-final, Paul Ferreira played a key role for Otter's Club 'Trail Blazzers'. Playing under pressure, Ferreira (+45) kept his cool to turn the tables on Mahesh Jagdale (+20) 100-71 in the crucial decider and seal the win in favour of the Bandra club. Mumbai, September 23, 2011

Playing on their home table, hosts Dadar Parsee Colony Gymkhana (DPCG) 'Roaring Tigers' did not let that advantage slip. In arrears, the Tigers recovered in grand fashion to turn the tables on Catholic Gymkhana 'Skittles' in a pre-quarter-final match of the WZO (World Zoroastrian Organisation) Trust Mumbai snooker league - 2011, organised by the Billiards & Snooker Association of Maharashtra (BSAM).

Despite playing in familiar surroundings, the Tigers were caught napping as they conceded the opening two frames to Skittles and trailed 0-2. But, the Tigers did not seem to be rattled by those setbacks. Instead they fought back strongly by winning the next three frames to snatch a thrilling 3-2 victory and a place in the last eight.

Once again it was the reliable Cyrus Kyani who did the trick for the Tigers. He lost the second frame to Clyde Affonso, but he held his nerves in the decider to prevail over same opponent in the crucial fifth frame and clinch the issue in favour of the Tigers.

Menawhile, Yasin Merchant, the man in form played another key role for Khar Gymkhana 'Rivals'.
