Rawat makes dram debut, wins senior snooker title.

Mumbai: Former Delhi cuesist Laxman Rawat of Khar Gymkhana made a dream debut, winning the senior snooker title in the Malabar Hill Club Maharashtra State Selection Tournament 2012, played at the WIAA Malabar Hill Club on Thursday. The 20-year-old Rawat, moving to Mumbai recently, showed tremendous fighting qualities to overcome another youngster Rahul Sachdev of Indian Snooker Academy by a 5-2 margin in the best-of-nine frame final on Thursday. In the title clash both the players started off shakily, missing some regulation pots. But, Sachdev the same age as his opponent, managed to get his nose ahead by pocketing the opening two frames, before Rawat clawed his way back by winning the next two, with a neat run of 44 in the fourth, to level the scores at 2-all. That seemed to be the perfect tonic for Rawat, who soon got into a groove and was on a roll thereafter. He compiled a mammoth break of 92 in the fifth and followed it up with another superb effort of 80 in the sixth before signing off with a run of 36 in the seventh to clinch the issue in his favour. He prevailed at 33-63, 35-54, 50-22, 64(44)-33,92(92)-01, 84(80)-0, 57(36)-14).

Earlier, young upcoming talent, 16-year-old Ishpreet Singh Chadha of Khar Gymkhana defeated Nikhil Ootam of Cricket Club of India (CCI) by three frames to one to finish in third place. Ishpreet had a remarkable outing in this State Selection tournament as he had earlier won the sub-junior boys’ snooker and junior boys’ billiards and snooker titles and also finished fourth in the senior billiards event. In the semi-finals played in the morning, Rawat halted the winning streak of Ootam as he romped to a fluent 4-1 victory, while Sachdev overcame the spirited challenge from Ishpreet posting a close 4-2 win.
