    Meenal Thakur claims National 9-ball pool title

    Mumbai, November 24: Maharashtra’s Meenal Thakur and third seed Rafat Habib of Railway Sports Promotion Board emerged champions as the women’s and men’s National 9-ball pool champion respectively.The Mumbai-based Meenal quashed the aspirations of Karnataka’s versatile cueist Judy Walia by posting a 6-3 victory in the race-to-six frames final contest of the NSCI-National 8-ball & 9-ball PoolChampionship, 2012, at the National Sports Club, Worli on Saturday. Thakur quickly got off the blocks and opened up a commanding 5-1 lead, before Walia managed to win the netx to racks to bridge the gap. But, Thakur did not provide her rival from the south much leeway as he won ninth rack rack to clinch the issue in her favour. The Chennai-based Habib showed solid fighting spirit as he rallied from a 8-6 deficit to overcome Chandigarh’s Sumit Talwar 11-9 in the race-to-11 rack final.

    In the women’s semi-finals, Walia staved off a spirited challenge from Anuja Chandra of PSPB winning the race-to-six rack match by a 6-4 margin, while Anuja’s elder sister Meenal faced little difficulty in getting past Neeta Sanghvi also of Maharashtra 6-2. Earlier in the men’s semi-finals, Talwar came up with a solid performance to knockout top seed and defending champion Alok Kumar of PSPB 9-7, while third seed Rafat Habib of RSPB advanced to the title round with an authoritative 9-2 victory against Delhi’s Laxman Rawat.

    Pandya knocks out second seed Gulati

    Mumbai, November 23: Maharashtra’s Rishabh Pandya caused a major upset defeating second seed Sandeep Gulati of New Delhi in a round of 32 men’s 9-ball match of the NSCI-National Pool Championship, 2012. The Mumbai-based cueist Pandya, who is employed with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) showed great character against Gulati, the reigning 8-ball champion. Pandya started off in a strong fashion and quickly raced to a 4-1 lead. Even though Gulati tried his best to get into the match, Pandya maintained the momentum and went on to post a 7-4 victory in the race-to-seven rack encounter at the National Sports Club of India, Worli on Friday evening. However, top seed and defending champion Alok Kumar of PSPB had no such hiccups as he cruised to an easy 7-1 win over Maharashtra Hasan Badami. In women’s action, Karnataka’s R. Umadevi Nagraj, who bagged the 8-ball title two days ago, was at her potting best and easily rolled past Bhanumathi Mendon also from Karnataka 4-0 in a Women’s 9-ball double elimination round match. Delhi’s teenager and fourth seed Keerath Bhandaal, who finished third in the 8-ball competition, outplayed Meenal Thakur of Maharashtra 4-0. However, Thakur managed to qualify for the quarter-final when she defeated Vaishali 4-1 in the double elimination round loser’s bracket match.

    Umadevi lifts 8-ball National title
     
    Mumbai, November 22: R. Umadevi Nagraj of Karnataka emerged as the women’s 8-ball champion in the NSCI-National Pool Championship, 2012.
    In the race-to-five racks final contested between two experienced cueist, Umadevi managed to get the better of home favourite Meenal Thakur of Maharashtra 5-3 to lift the women’s crown, at the National Sports Club of India, Worli on Thursday evening. Thakur, who had enjoyed a comfortable journey to the summit round failed to live up to expectations and had to settle for second best. On the other hand the Karnataka player, who has performed consistently in this competition, once again rose to the big occasion and walked away with the top honours. Umadevi played a calculated game and did not attempt to take any risks, which helped tilt the balance in her favour. Earlier, in the women’s semi-final, the seasoned campaigner Umadevi got the better of Delhi teenager Keerath Bhandaal 5-3, and Thakur blanked Aradhana Naik of Karnataka 5-0. However, there was some consolation for the young Delhi cueist, Keerath as she finished third after defeating Aradhana 3-2 to win the 3-4th place match.

    Gulati earns early birthday gift

    Gulati overcomes Talwar to win Nat 8-ball pool title

    Mumbai, November 21: Top seed Sandeep Gulati of Delhi earned himself and advanced ‘birthday gift, by winning the men’s 8-ball title in the NSCI-National Pool Championship, 2012. Gulati, who turns 32 on Friday, justified his billing as the number one seed by dashing the aspirations of second seed Sumit Talwar of Chandigarh in the final. Gulati, who had last won the National crown in 2010, stuck the balls with better consistency to carve out a 9-6 victory in the race-to-nine rack final the National Sports Club of India, Worli on Wednesday night. Earlier, Gulati scored an authoritative victory over Manan Chandra of (PSPB), who had a solid run in the previous two rounds on Tuesday night. Chandra, who won both, his pre-quarters and quarter-final matches without dropping a rack, was unable to maintain his form and carry it forward for this crucial match. Gulati was in full flow and rolled to a convincing 8-2 victory. On an adjacent table, Talwar dished out another classy performance to put it across another PSPB cueist Shabaaz Khan in the other semi-final. Talwar kept his cool and was always in control as he coasted to a 8-5 victory, to set up an interesting summit clash with Gulati. In women’s 8-ball contest, Delhi youngster Keerath Bhandaal cut down to size her much senior and illustrious opponent Judy Walia from Karnataka. The young cueist from Delhi potted steadily to stun Walia 4-2 in the-race-to-four rack quarter-final clash. Meanwhile, in sibling rivalry, Meenal Thakur of Maharashtra brushed aside her younger sister Anuja Thakur of PSPB by a 4-0 margin in another quarter-final encounter. Karnataka’s R. Umadevi Nagraj also advanced to the semi-finals defeating Sangeeta Hemchand of Maharashtra 4-2. In the fourth semi-final, Aradhana Naik of Karnataka put it across Neeta Sanghvi of Mahrashtra 4-2 to complete the semi-final line-up.

    Manan Chandra storms into semis; Alok Kumar crashes to Sandeep Gulati
     

    Mumbai, November 20: Oft-crowned champion, Manan Chandra of PSPB (Petroleum Sports Promotion Board) was in devastating form as he bulldozed his way into the semi-finals of the men’s 8-ball competition, of the NSCI-National Pool Championship, 2012. The two-time National champ, enjoyed an excellent run of the balls as he breezed to a 7-0 win against Maharashtra’s Kabil Badami in the race to seven rack quarter-final contest at the National Sports Club of India, Worli on Tuesday evening. Chandra, who also has five National 9-ball titles to his credit, had earlier, steamrolled past J. Ganesh of Railways 6-0 in the race to six rack pre-quarter-final encounter. In other men’s quarter-final action, defending champion Alok Kumar of PSPB crashed out losing 7-3 to Sandeep Gulati of Delhi, Sumit Talwar ended the dream run 19-year-old Nitesh Madan of Delhi and Shabaz Khan of PSPB outplayed Hasan Badami 7-2 and that ended the challenge from the state cueist. Overall it was a great day for Chandra, as his wife, Anuja also showed good touch by winning both her Group-B matches of the women’s 8-ball double elimination round to qualify for the quarter-finals. Judy Walia of Karnataka and Maharashtra’s Neeta Sanghvi also won their matches to join Anuja in the last eight. Walia defeated Shilpa S also of Karnataka 3-1, while Sanghvi overcame Sangeeta Hemchand of Maharashtra by a close 3-2 margin. However, Hemchand managed to qualify for the next round as she subdued Heena Khandelwal from Maharshtra 3-0 in the loser’s bracket of the double elimination round. Earlier, in the pre-quarter-finals, Alok had shown the door to Faisal Khan of RSPB winning by a 6-3 margin and set up a interesting quarter-final clash with Gulati, who tamed K. Venkatesham (RSPB) 6-4.

    Talwar eases into round of 32

    Mumbai, November 19: Second seed Sumit Talwar of Chandigarh brushed aside the challenge from Maharashtra’s Sagar Desai to progress to the round of 32 in the men’s 8-ball competition, of the NSCI-National Pool Championship, 2012.Talwar, who last year finished runner-up to Alok Kumar of PSPB (Petroleum Sports Promotion Board), eased to a comfortable 6-2 victory in the race to six racks, round of 64 contest at the National Sports Club of India, Worli on Monday evening. Dharminder Lilly of Punjab and Siddharth Parikh of Railways Sports Promotion Board, both also won their respective matches by an identical 6-2 margin to join Talwar in the next round. Lilly tamed Maharashtra’s Prashant Mhatre, while Parikh sideleined Hasneet Singh of Haryana. Meanwhile, Delhi teenager Nitesh Madan held his nerves to make it to the next round. In a match of fluctuating fortunes in which the lead changed hands several times the 19-year-old Delhi cueist pulled off a deserving 6-4 victory. In the most exciting match of the day, Deepak Kumar of Punjab almost threw away the match before clinching a 6-5 win over Rishit Jain of Delhi. Kumar started off with a flourish and quickly raced to a 5-1 lead. But, thereafter, he seemed to have lost his concentration and allowed his opponent to draw level at 5-5.

    However, he regained his composure and managed to win the crucial sixth rack to seal the match in his favour.

    Top seed Gulati survives; Bawa stuns his way into round of 64

    Mumbai, November 17: Top seed Sandeep Gulati of Delhi suffered a shock defeat in his first match of the men’s 8-ball competition of the NSCI-National Pool Championship, 2012. The ace cueist from Delhi went down fighting to Maharashtra’s Sumeet Devang 4-5 in the race to five frames double elimination round Group-C match at the National Sports Club of India, Worli on Saturday. However, he managed to stay alive in the competition as he was awarded a walkover after his opponent Dipendra Pinkyar of Maharashtra failed to report for the match in the loser’s bracket. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Ish Bawa, playing in familiar surroundings, enjoyed a good run of the balls as he won both his matches to qualify for the knockout round. Bawa, a member of the NSCI, did not take much time to adjust to the tables and quickly got into a rhythm as he first scored a stunning win against seasoned Delhi cueist Vijay Goel 5-3 in a long drawn Group-H encounter. Having tasted success over a more recognised opponent in his first match, Bawa seemed to have grown in confidence as he later tamed the challenge of Gujarat’s Shehzad Shaikh posting  a quick 5-2 victory to make the round of 64. Last year’s champion, Alok Kumar of PSPB started off strongly by also winning both his matches to progress to the next round.

    All matches scheduled for Sunday have been postponed to Monday. The organisers will now reschedule the next round of matches.
