    CCI are ‘Snooker Kings’

CCI ‘Snooker Kings’ overcame Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana ‘Tigers’ in a 3-2 thriller to emerge champions in The World Zoroastrian Organization Trust Mumbai Snooker League 2012, organized by the Billiards & Snooker Association of Maharashtra, at the Dadar Parsee Colony Gymkhana.

Twice in arrears, Tigers’ kept their hopes alive through the seasoned Devendra Joshi who won both his singles ties convincingly, including one against state champion Hasan Badami, to force the decider. But it was former state champion Nikhil Ootam who stood between the ‘Tigers’ and victory, after he won both his singles ties including the decider against the same opponent, Anup Kedia.

After ignoring glaring blemishes in the third tie against Ootam, Kedia, playing with a handicap of +45 to his advantage, as against Ootam’s +10, made amends and delighted with two red cannons and a pink cannon that briefly harboured hopes of an upset win. He went on to hold a 68-67 lead in the decider with only the colours remaining, even as Ootam fired a significant break of 31 early in the tie that ended prematurely when the black rattled the top right jaw.

But when Ootam sliced in the brown and returned for the blue and pink which were ideally placed at the centre, the scent of victory smelled sweet for the man of the moment as well as the ‘Snooker Kings’.

Result (Final): CCI ‘Snooker Kings’ bt JVPG ‘Tigers’ 3-2 (Satbir Narula/Hitesh Kotwani bt B. Kanani/V. Kedia; Hasan Badami lost to Devendra Joshi; Nikhil Ootam bt Anup Kedia; Hitesh Kotwani lost to Devendra Joshi; Nikhil Ootam bt Anup Kedia.

Led by Hitesh Kotwani, who won both his ties, ‘Snooker Kings’ overcame Khar Gymkhana ‘Jaws’, while JVPG ‘Tigers’ halted Mandpeshwar Civic Federation ‘Dark Knights’ of Borivali.

In the process, state champion Nikhil Ootam of ‘Snooker Kings’ ended Pawan Kohli’s unbeaten streak while maintaining his own unbeaten run in the play-offs. Anup Kedia of JVPG ‘Tigers’ recorded a significant break of 42 in the crucial fourth tie against Chandu Kansodaria to take the match away.

MCF ‘Dark Knights’ made a surprise entry into the last four with a riveting 3-2 win over formidable CCI ‘Rockets’, after trailing 1-2.

After winning the opening tie, ‘Dark Knight’ Avenish Shah forced the contest into the decider by snatching the crucial fourth tie to keep his team’s hopes alive. Jambusaria was under immense pressure against Jain who is also India junior No. 2. But in a dramatic finish, Jambusaria sunk in the blue to take the match away in an-edge-of-the-seat thriller.

Let off the hook, Pandya finally potted the pink to win the tie 80-71, leaving Agrawal to ponder what might have been.

Nishant Dossa and Raj Khandwala beat Marzdi Kalyaniwala and Zareer Shroff in the following doubles tie to seal the issue 3-0.

In another thrilling pre-quarter-final, Khar Gymkhana ‘Jaws’ who shocked defending champions PJ Hindu Gymkhana ‘Hustlers’ in the previous round, survived a scare after leading 2-0 against Matunga Gymkhana ‘Maltese Monks’.

‘Monks’ won the third doubles tie to make it 1-2 but it was Ankit Thakkar who shocked the formidable Faisal Khan 102-98 in a black ball finish, in a nail-biting fourth tie that saw a scintillating display of snookers by both cueists. But Pawan Kohli halted the ‘Monks’ with a win over Poras Shah to snatch the contest for the ‘Jaws’.
