    Sultans’ rule in billiards

‘Sultans’, who played with a total handicap of -160, got off to an envious start as Asian bronze medallist Devendra Joshi fired a break of 86 to tame Hasan Badami 200-59 in the opening tie, while twice world runner-up Dhruv Sitwala subdued Hitesh Kotwani 200-92 in the second tie.

Playing with a handicap of +170, ‘Billiards Boys’ had a target of 119 in the deciding tie as Kekoo Nicholson faced the formidable Siddharth Parikh of ‘Sultans’.

CCI Boys, Sultans in title clash

    Ghadge gives Dhingra a scare

CCI ‘Billiards Boys’ and favourites P.J. Hindu Gymkhana ‘Sultans of Hazard’ registered contrasting wins to set up a title clash in The Zarine & Yazdi Daruvala Charitable Trust Mumbai Billiards League 2012, orgainsed by the Billiards & Snooker Association of Maharashtra, at the Dadar Parsee Colony Gymkhana.

‘Billiards Boys’ halted Park Club ‘Samurais’ with a 570-340 win after Hasan Badami and Hitesh Kotwani sealed the issue in the opening two ties, while star-studded ‘Sultans’ ended the winning streak of Central Railway Mechanical Institute ‘Star Blue’ with an exciting 515-500 win.

Asian bronze medallist Devendra Joshi and twice world runner-up Dhruv Sitwala put ‘Sultans’ in a commanding position after the opening two ties that left Star Blue’s Sunil Ghadge a stiff target of 185 against Maharashtra junior No. 1 Jaiveer Dhingra’s 200 in the deciding tie.

While Dhingra led 176-113 and 180-130 and looked set to take the match away without much ado, Ghadge brought the contest to life when he inched his way 170-183. The narrow deficit put Dhingra under immense pressure in the dying stages before he recovered in the nick of time to pip Ghadge in a nail-biting finish.

    Sultans, Samurais in semis

Favourites P.J. Hindu Gymkhana ‘Sultans of Hazard’ and Park Club ‘Samurais’ registered comfortable wins to sail into the semi-finals of The Zarine & Yazdi Daruvala Charitable Trust Mumbai Billiards League 2012, orgainsed by the Billiards & Snooker Association of Maharashtra, at the Dadar Parsee Colony Gymkhana on Friday.

Sultans’ class came to the fore as twice world runner-up Dhruv Sitwala, Asian bronze medallist Devendra Joshi and India sub junior No. 2 and Maharashtra junior No. 1 Jaiveer Dhingra lived up to their reputations.

Once again, Vishal Gehani won the opening tie against Amandeep Kohli 200-145 to give ‘Samurais’ a good start. But Deepak Khubchandani offered ‘Senior’ a ray of hope by winning the second tie 200-192 against Sanjeev Bijlani.
