    Faisal stuns Yasin for title

Faisal Khan of Railways shocked double Asian champion and favourite Yasin Merchant in a 5-4 thriller to emerge champion in the Islam Gymkhana-BSAM.in Open Snooker Tournament on Saturday.

Always the poor cousin among the elite, Khan announced his arrival on the circuit with a stunning 118-16, 66-29, 69-6, 73-42, 0-68, 46-65, 13-69, 48-62, 71-53 victory over his current coach in the best-of-nine frames, two-and-a-half hour classic that ended in a riveting decider.

Playing Merchant for the second time after losing to him at MIG, Khan has been the only cueist with consistent half-century breaks since he kicked off his campaign. He began the final with the competition’s highest break of 114 in the opening frame and added a 54 and 68 in the following two. He shot into a 4-0 cushion in a trice, needing just one more frame to seal the issue that would have explained why Merchant announced his retirement from international snooker recently.

But Merchant soon revealed why he is still the master. He returned after the interval to win three frames in a row with some memorable pots that left the packed billiards room craving for more. He then forced the decider by seizing the opportunity for a clearance that was offered on a platter in the crucial eighth frame and in the process taught his pupil one more lesson. That remarkable effort also revealed that his passion for his favourite sport had not yet diminished.

Merchant opened the final frame with a break of 32 to sound an early warning. But Khan immediately replied with a 45 to set the stage for a humdinger. The scores were tied at 45-all until Merchant, who was on course to snatch it away, missed the pink in the centre following a grisly distraction and Khan returned to close the frame and match to earn only his second title since 2008.

“Faisal was a deserving victor. He was aggressive, positive, confident and completely comfortable. I managed to force the decider because pressure gets the best out of me,” explained Merchant, who along with Khan, featured in the Karachi Invitational tournament recently.

“It’s not very often that one enjoys a 4-0 lead against a calibre player like Yasin sir. He showed his class by stretching the match into the decider by punishing me each time I made a mistake. His quick breaks put me under pressure. But I was striking the balls well and chose to play my natural game.”

    Result: Final: Faisal Khan (Rlys) bt Yasin Merchant (Islam Gym) 118(114)-16, 66(54)-29, 69(68)-6, 73-42, 0-68, 46-65, 13-69, 48-62, 71-53.

    Yasin, Faisal in final

Double Asian champion Yasin Merchant and Faisal Khan registered identical 5-1 wins to set up a title clash in the Islam Gymkhana-BSAM.in Open Snooker Tournament on Friday.
