    Mhatree pips Kasare for title

Former champion L.S. Mhatree of Tata Sports Club fashioned an exciting 5-3 victory over last year’s runner-up Manoj Kasare of Khar Gymkhana to clinch the title, in the 4th Pro Classic 6-Red Snooker Tournament for markers, organised and hosted by Islam Gymkhana, on Tuesday.

Mhatree, who was all but out of the competition in a thrilling semi-final against Islam Gymkhana’s Amit Jadhav, recovered from a 1-3 deficit to romp to a 24-22, 42-8, 19-40, 13-39, 13-41, 45-10, 41-1, 34-8 win in a best-of-nine frames championship round between quality cueists.

Kasare squandered a crucial 3-2 lead after trailing 0-2 in a contest that had its share of excitement and sprung to life as Mhatree initiated a brilliant recovery and capped his effort with a delightful clearance from the penultimate red in the crucial eighth frame.

“I had lost all hope after trailing 1-3 against an in-form Amit Jadhav in the semi-final. My fortunes changed after that match and I began to focus on every frame without putting myself under pressure. I faced a similar situation in the final. Kasare is a quality player with a lot of experience. But I chose to play my natural game and emerged victorious,” said a delighted Mhatree who earned a winner’s prize of Rs. 10,000, while Kasare received Rs. 7,000.

    Results (Final):

L.S. Mhatree (Tata SC) bt Manoj Kasare (Khar Gym)

    24-22, 42-8, 19-40, 13-39, 13-41, 45-10, 41-1, 34-8.

    Jadhav, Karande crash out

Favourites Ajay Jadhav and Prakash Karande frittered away 2-0 leads to crash out in the first round, on a dramatic day of upsets, in the 4th Pro Classic 6-Red Snooker Tournament for markers, organised and hosted by Islam Gymkhana, on Saturday.

Santosh Abnave of CCI caused the first upset of the tournament when he rallied from a 0-2 deficit to shock Ajay Jadhav of Islam Gymkhana 19-29, 14-38, 38-4, 39-21, 31-24 in a thriller that went down to the wire and ended in a black-ball finish.

Jadhav relaxed his grip after surging comfortably to an early lead and looked set to win in straight frames. But Abnave changed the script with a brilliant recovery. He chose to believe in himself while welcoming the openings that were offered by Jadhav.
