    Lilly beats Advani in seven-frame thriller

    Pune, May 15: Dharminder Lilly scored an upset win over Pankaj Advani to infuse a surprise element into the qualification for the 15-Red World Snooker Championship, at the Poona Club here on Thursday.

    In a best-of-seven-frame league match, Lilly rallied brilliantly to level scored after thrice falling behind before he took the final frame potting confidently to clean up the table.

    Advani, who had beaten Devendra Joshi 57-52, 78 (54)-37, 81 (65)-1, 74-67 in straight frames, began with a break of 53 in the first frame against Lilly before winning it 85-45.

    Lilly shot back with a break of 93 to take the second frame 108-9 as the two began winning the frame in turns. Advani took the third 75-29 then Lilly followed with a break of 63 to take the fourth 90-42.

    Yet another half-century break worth 76 saw Advani winning the fifth frame 78-21 before Lilly took control of the match. The Punjab cueist, who had come into the match after losing to Kamal Chawla, then pocketed the remaining two, winning the sixth 63-52 and the decider 57-15 to take the match 4-3.

    Earlier in the day, Chawla defeated Lilly 1-80 (68), 76-7, 29-71, 58-16, 88-1, 41-49, 61-52 and then beat Devendra Joshi 35-76, 86-0, 68-45, 84-55, 77-12 for a perfect record.

    Having finished fourth overall and making it to the Indian team for the 6-Red World Snooker Championship, Chawla looked to be on course for yet another spot with his performance.

    The 6-Red Snooker winner Faisal Khan too recorded wins. First he beat Mana Chandra of Petroleum Sports Promotion Board 73 (66)-6, 77-69, 32-87, 42-67, 17-72 and then Delhi’s Varun Madan with 82-32, 62-52, 68-44, 79 (51)-35 straight-frame win.

    Faisal Khan wins World Snooker Selection tournament

     

    Pune, May 14: Railways’ cueist Faisal Khan topped the World Snooker Selection Camp with a rousing win over Petroleum Sports Promotion Board’s (PSPB) Shahbaz Khan to win the final 4-2 at the Poona Club here on Thursday.

    After the gruelling league matches, the top four cueists—Faisal, Shahbaaz, Sourav Kothari and Kamal Chawla—made it to the knock-out semi-final round.

    Faisal first defeated Sourav Kothari in the semifinals and then raced past Shahbaaz in the best-of-seven-frame final 61-0, 49-9, 0-69, 48-0, 34-35, 45-2.

    Faisal won the first two frames 61-0 and 49-9 before Shahbaaz made a rally and took the third 69-0. Faisal was up for the challenge and he improved his lead to 3-1 by winning the fourth frame 48-0.

    The fifth frame was as tight as it could get as Faisal led 34-28 with just the black ball remaining on the table. After a few safety shots, Shahbaaz took the frame 35-34 forcing the match into sixth frame, which Faisal won 45-2.

    In the match-up for the third place, Sourav Kothari defeated Kamal Chawla 34-2, 52-9, 40-20, 22-29, 44-0 and in the play-off for the fifth place Manan Chandra beat Varun Madan 35-6, 44-9.

    The Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI) following the 6-Red World Snooker Qualification Tournament, announced four-member team for the World Championship scheduled in Pakistan in August.

    Faisal Khan, Shahbaaz Khan, Sourav Kothari and Kamal Chawla will represent India at the world championship.

    For fifth place: Manan Chandra (PSPB) bt Varun Madan (Del) 35-6, 44-9.
